3 Top Tips for Vocal Health

Treating a disordered voice is more than just vocal exercises.  There are lots of ways in which you can start improving the health of your larynx (voice box) today. 


Here are three top tips to start the recovery of your voice:

1) Drink more water

Try to drink 2 litres of water per day.  This will prevent dehydration of the vocal folds. 

Carry a bottle of water with you or ensure that you always have a glass of water nearby.


2) Start steaming

This will introduce moisture into the vocal tract and helps keep the vocal folds hydrated.

Carry out steam inhalations twice per day.  Half fill a bowl with water that has just boiled.  Sit comfortably and cover your head, shoulders, and the bowl with a large towel.  Breathe in and out through your mouth.  Continue until the water stops steaming. 


3) Have plenty of voice rest

If your voice feels strained or tired then rest it.  This is your body's way of telling you to rest your voice. 

Find some time during the day to rest your voice, for example during lunch, or in the car.
